The Task Assignment node controls who receives a task when a Human Approval step is reached. It sits on the canvas as a separate node, placed before or alongside the Human Approval node it feeds.
Assignment Modes
Three modes are available in the node inspector:
Role — Assign to everyone who holds a given workspace Role (e.g. "Finance Approver"). The actual person is resolved at runtime. Multiple Roles can be added.
People — Assign to one or more specific named team members.
From workflow — Bind the assignee to a value from a prior workflow step — for example, a lookup result or a field value from a submitted form. Use this when the right person depends on the data being processed.
Completion Mode
When assigning to specific People, you can choose:
- One at a time — tasks are sent in order; each person must respond before the next is notified
- At the same time — all assignees receive the task simultaneously
When using Role or From workflow mode, completion is always At the same time automatically.
Fallback
If no assignee resolves at runtime, configure a fallback:
- Catch-all — route to a specific backup person or Role
- Fail — fail the step and optionally notify an email address
Sequential vs parallel steps
Separate from assignment, the workflow itself can route steps in different patterns:
- Sequential (default) — each step completes before the next begins. Use for approval chains and staged handoffs.
- Parallel branches — use Branch nodes to send execution down multiple paths simultaneously. Use a merge point downstream to re-join before continuing.
